Clausthal University of Technology is located in the small town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the middle of the Oberharz at an altitude of approx. 600 m (position N51° 48', E10° 20'), surrounded by dark green coniferous forests and over 60 ponds of the Oberharzer Wasserregal. The mountain town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld has a good 15,500 inhabitants, including around 4,000 students, and belongs to the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony. Clausthal-Zellerfeld is the seat of the "mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld" (until 2014 the joint municipality of Oberharz) and was formed in 1924 through the merger of the two towns of Clausthal and Zellerfeld. The depression between the two districts marks a natural "borderline" that is felt by the locals.
